A Calzone with What You Have

Last week, when I used my new Danish Dough Whisk, I made a whole wheat with rye dough. As it was rising, I was feeling creative and needed to make something for dinner.

I had some bread dough rising and some leftover chicken in the fridge. And a jar of Oliverio’s Italian Style Peppers in Olvero Sauce from the Retreat.

Oh my. This was my first time trying what many people in WV have talked about. This is absolutely the best sauce I’ve ever had. It could be used anywhere. I’d use it in place of pizza sauce or spaghetti sauce. As long as you like green peppers in a tomato sauce, you’d love these.

And it has 0g of fat per serving!

I decided to make a calzone-type of pie–which is simply a pizza turnover. You can put whatever you want in your calzone, just like you can have whatever you want on your pizza. I could have simply made some breadsticks and dunked them in the sauce, but I decided to go for a whole meal.

I divided the dough in four balls. These were huge calzones, I could have easily divided it into eight pieces.

Roll each ball of dough into a circle or close to a circle.

Then liberally spread some Olvero Sauce into the middle, leaving room to seal the edges.

I topped it with some leftover shredded chicken. Use whatever you’d like! Anything you like on your pizza or have leftover in the fridge, add it to your calzone!

That is all I put in mine. We don’t eat cheese. The sauce is very flavorful and I had the protein with the chicken. It was enough.

Then simply fold that in half and pinch the sides together.

Place on a greased sheet.

For another Italian flavor, I sprayed the tops with a non-stick spray just enough for some crushed Italian-type of herbs to stick.

Bake at 350F for around 30 minutes.

And enjoy!

    Those look terrific! Just wonderful!!

And now you understand why we are all CRAZY sbout that sauce. I like to fish out the peppers to put inside and use the tomato sauce for dipping. Sometimes.
