Cooking with Kids Courtesy of CITR

I love autumn. I love the falling leaves (we don’t see as much of that here in the Pacific NW, what with all the evergreens). I love the cool crisp air and wearing sweaters. I love harvest and pumpkins and most of all, Halloween!

Most years Halloween comes and goes before we’re ready for it and we never get a chance to make any of the fun recipes out there. Well this year, I decided, is going to be different.

I started by sending out an APB on CITR for Halloween recipes to make with the kids. West Virginia Bound Ladies was kind enough to post a wonderful, easy, fun, and tasty recipe. They are called Abracadabra Hats and the children had a grand time making them. They also had a great time eating them!

How to make Abracadabra Hats: Printable

1 package refrigerated crescent rolls (or make own dough)
1/2 teaspoon dried basil leaves (optional)
16 pepperoni slices
3 to 4 Slim Jim sticks cut into 2 inch pieces (I use leftover weenies from Boo Bugs)
2 cups pizza or marinara sauce

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Separate dough. Place dough on a workspace. Gently shape into triangles and sprinkle with basil.

Cut pepperoni into crescent moon shapes. (I use my small biscuit cutter.) Each slice makes two crescent moons. Place Slim Jim or cocktail weenie along the base of each dough triangle. Partially roll up dough to cover the Slim Jim or weenie to create the brim of the hat. Place two crescents on the top part of the hat; place on ungreased nonstick baking sheet. Bake 12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.

Warm sauce and serve with hats for dipping sauce.

We didn’t have any of the pepperoni that the recipe called for so our hats are sort of plain, but we had a wonderful time nonetheless and all thanks to CITR and West Virginia Bound Ladies!

I am so glad that you and the girls had a wonderful time making this recipe. You don’t even have to use meat you could even use leftover vegetables to sneek more in on the kids if you wanted to subsitute it in the recipe.

  2. Cassie says:

What if we used string cheese pieces? Mmmmm! The possibilities are endless! Thanks for the recipe and ideas WVBL!
