This is a very dense, moist cake and almost fudge-like. My mom found this recipe in the newspaper almost 50 years ago. It has been our family “Birthday Cake” since then.

Servings: 15-20
Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 1 hr. 15 min.Ingredients
1 c. boiling water
2 squares unsweetened baking chocolate
1/2 c. soft butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 c +2 Tbsp. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c sour cream
Directions
Combine and let cool: boiling water and *unsweetened chocolate
Cream together: soft butter, vanilla, brown sugar and eggs
In a separate bowl combine: flour, baking soda and salt
Combine the cooled chocolate mixture with sour cream
Add in the creamed ingredients and the flour mixture
Mix well
Pour into a greased loaf pan, lined with waxed paper
Bake at *325 for 1 hour and 15 minutes
Let cool for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire wrack and remove the waxed paper
Frost with chocolate butter cream frosting

* I sometimes make the equivalent of this with Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate powder + a little Crisco or lard.
