This recipe was made by my MIL, who always tried to make cheap dinners more exciting. I was unsure of the “gravy” when she described it to me, but was won over with the first bite!
Difficulty: Easy
Servings: 6 - 8 (depending on the amount of steak used)
Prep Time: 5 min Cook Time: 3 hours in oven - Varies with crock potIngredients
1 round steak (or how much is needed for your family)
1 quart whole or stewed tomatoes
1 can peas
1 onion soup mix
Gravy:
1/4 cup flour
1 cup water or milk, your preference
Directions
Brown both sides of the round steak. Place in dutch oven or crock pot.
Pour in tomatoes, peas, and onion soup mix.
In the oven, bake at 350 for 3 hours.
In the crock pot, cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours.
Remove steak from dish. Keep warm.
Using a jar for a shaker, place flour then the water (or milk) — shake until no clumps of flour are visible. Bring tomato/pea mixture to a boil and whisk in flour paste. Cook on low for a few minutes until thick. This creates the gravy for mashed potatoes.
