This is a recipe that I put together myself after researching what was in Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix. I use low-sodium beef bouillon. You may want to add salt to your taste. You could use crushed celery seed if you don’t have dried celery, too.
Difficulty: Easy
Servings: approx 4 packets worth
Ingredients
1 cup minced onion
1/3 cup + 2 Tbsp beef bouillon
1 1/2 Tbsp onion powder
1/4 tsp dried celery
Directions
Combine all ingredients. Store in jar.
About 5 Tbsp of mix are equal to 1 – 1.25 oz pkg.
To make dip:
Combine 5 Tbsp with 1 pint sour cream.
I usually use about 1/4 cup mix when using in dishes calling for onion soup mix.

This is great! I made it with regular beef bouillon and it was plenty salty enough without adding any separately. Tastes just like the store’s onion soup mix only cheaper!

Thanks for a great idea! Are you using bouillon powder? If so, would you PLEASE tell me where you find it? I have been looking for bouillon powder with no msg and cannot find it anywhere. Making it without the msg would be my biggest reason for wanting to make my own mix. Thanks so much!

I buy it here http://www.barryfarm.com/nutri_info/cooking%20supplies/beefbroth.html I don’t see MSG in the ingredient list!
I also get the Chicken Broth Powder from there, and Clear Jel!

Unfortunately Autolyzed Yeast is also MSG. I, too, have been on a quest for beef bouillon (in any form) that does not contain an MSG ingredient. Seems making it yourself from beef bones is the only options.
