This is a crowd pleaser for any event. The recipe was handed down through 3 generations of mothers with my daughters being the fourth. There is no Christmas or birthday without cinnamon twists in our family. It is a tradition that everybody looks forward to and loves. It is well worth the time spent and the grandkids love to help roll out the dough. It makes the kitchen a fun place to be for everybody.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Servings: 24 twists
Prep Time: 45 minutes Cook Time: 10-12 minutesIngredients
1 cup milk
2/3 oil
2/3 cup sugar
1 t. salt
2 eggs beaten
4-1/2 cups flour
1 pkg yeast
1/2 cup warm water
Topping:
1/2 cup melted butter
2 cups sugar mixed with 2-1/2 t. cinnamon
Directions
Scald milk. Add oil, sugar and salt to milk. Let cool to lukewarm. Add beaten eggs. Dissolve yeast in water and add to egg mixture. Add flour; mix thoroughly. Kneed til smooth. Put in greased bowl turning to grease both bottom and top. Let raise til double in bulk. Punch down. Cover and place in refrigerator to chill.
Pull dough and shape into golf-ball sized pieces then roll into 5-6 inch long strips between hands (will look like pudgy cigars). Dip each strip in melted butter, then in cinnamon and sugar mixture. Gently tie in 1 knot and place on baking sheet. Let rise til double.
Bake at 350 F for 10-12 minutes until lightly browned.
TIP: Use parchment paper on baking sheets. It makes for an easy removal and nonstick surface, otherwise, may be very difficult to remove because of the sugar coating. Parchment paper is my best friend in the kitchen!
