Asking for advice or experience on length of time frozen food (whole turkey) is still edible. I know about frost bite but what has been your experience. I’m guilty of finding two turkeys at bottom of chest freezer today. What a waste.
Thanks for any help.

If you have not received an answer yet contact The company that produced the turkey. There should be an 800 number on the wraping. If not, contact any of the companies, they can answer your question.

I’ve found it depends on freezer temp and how well the food’s protected. At zero degrees F, I’ve had well-wrapped meats last more than 2 years w/o noticible decline in quality. Not so much with veggies, though fruits and veggies frozen in liquid in heavy plastic containers tends to far outlast the recommended time frames in my old Stocking Up book.

Thanks for the input. I went ahead and cooked one and was suprised there was no freezer burn and it seems fine. I’m sure both have been in the bottom of the freezer for over a year. I think the guidelines are usually on the short side of timeframes for a variety of reasons. And I will not buy more than one turkey at a time 🙂

The USDA site has a Freezer Storage Chart (0 °F) on which it claims that
frozen foods remain safe indefinitely. However, they give recommended times for quality. Their chart of times is at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/focus_on_freezing/index.asp#12
