This is a great recipe from “deb in wv” in our old Community Cookbook. Follow the attribution link for a lively discussion of the recipe. And thanks again, deb, for posting it! We like it a LOT in our house.
Difficulty: Easy
Servings: 10 pints
Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 1-1/2 hoursIngredients
5 quarts tomato juice
6 green peppers (diced)
12 onions (diced)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 pint vinegar
3 Tbs salt
1 tsp ground cloves
2 cups brown sugar
Directions
Simmer all ingredients except brown sugar for 1/2 hour. Add the brown sugar and cook for 1 hour or so until thick.
Fill pint jars, wipe rims, place lids and rings on jars, and process in boiling water bath for 15 minutes. Makes 10 pints.
To make Sloppy Joes, brown 1 pound of ground beef. Add 1 pint Sloppy Joe sauce and heat until bubbly. If too thick, add a bit of water.
Note: Salt may be greatly reduced, especially if using commercial tomato juice. We used part commercial juice and added no salt at all, finding it to be plenty salty for our taste.
